4-day / 3-night itinerary

Four Days in Detroit: Markets, Museums, and Music

Arrive downtown, use an active Saturday Market for the Eastern Market and riverfront route, choose a focused Belle Isle visit or a longer river day, and reserve the second full day for Midtown museums, architecture, or current Motown and automotive programs.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

Eastern Market, the Dequindre Cut, the RiverWalk, Belle Isle, Midtown, New Center, and Corktown occupy distinct parts of Detroit.

Best length

4 days / 3 nights

Three nights provide an arrival evening, one market-and-river day, one museum-and-neighborhood day, and a departure morning.

Stay

Atheneum Suite Hotel

This all-suite Greektown hotel sits near Monroe Street restaurants, casino gaming, and the People Mover.

Main activity

Eastern Market, the Dequindre Cut, the RiverWalk, and Belle Isle

Give one full day to the market, greenway, riverfront, and island; give the other to art, architecture, music, and automotive history.

Pace

Walk within districts; ride between them

Downtown is compact, while Belle Isle, Midtown, New Center, Corktown, and Dearborn require separate transit, rideshare, bicycle, or car trips.

Downtown Detroit streets and towers at blue hour
Downtown puts the riverfront, landmark architecture, Campus Martius, Greektown, and major venues within a compact first evening.
Eastern Market sheds and colorful produce on a Detroit morning
Eastern Market and the Dequindre Cut lead naturally toward the riverfront when the market calendar and weather cooperate.
Belle Isle shoreline, trees, and Detroit River views
Belle Isle is a separate island outing with state-park vehicle rules, seasonal facilities, and long distances between some attractions.
Illustrated museum facade representing the Detroit Institute of Arts and Midtown museum district
Midtown supports a full culture day around the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Historical Museum, Wright Museum, and nearby architecture.

Arrival

Downtown dinner and a short riverfront walk.

Check in Downtown or Greektown, eat nearby, and walk Campus Martius, the Guardian Building exterior, or an open RiverWalk segment before turning in.

4:00 PM

6:30 PM

First dinner

Start with La Lanterna.

La Lanterna serves brick-oven pizza and Italian dishes in Capitol Park, within walking distance of central Downtown hotels.

Day 2

Eastern Market, river paths, and Belle Isle.

On an active Saturday Market date, begin in Eastern Market, follow the Dequindre Cut toward the RiverWalk, and stop for lunch before choosing a focused Belle Isle visit or more time along the river. Without the market, begin Downtown and give Belle Isle the longer block.

8:30 AM

Breakfast

Eat before the market and greenway.

Have breakfast near the hotel or Eastern Market before the Dequindre Cut and riverfront portion of the day.

9:00 AM

Main activity

Walk Eastern Market and the Dequindre Cut to the river.

Browse the active market, enter the Dequindre Cut near the district, and follow the greenway toward an open RiverWalk segment. Finish near the river by early afternoon and eat in Eastern Market or Downtown before the next leg.

2:00 PM

Afternoon

Choose Belle Isle or a longer riverfront afternoon.

Reach Belle Isle by car, rideshare, transit, or bicycle for a focused two- to three-hour visit, selecting the aquarium, conservatory, shoreline, or nature center before crossing the bridge. Leave the island or riverfront by 5:15 p.m. for the direct ride to a 7 p.m. Midtown dinner. Otherwise remain on the RiverWalk and return Downtown without the island transfer. The conservatory currently opens Wednesday through Sunday, while park facilities and construction closures keep separate schedules.

7:00 PM

Dinner

Choose dinner at Selden Standard.

Selden Standard serves seasonal New American small plates from a wood-fired kitchen in Midtown.

Day 3

Midtown art, New Center, and architectural Detroit.

Begin at the Detroit Institute of Arts or another Midtown museum, then choose New Center architecture, a current Motown program, or Corktown's Michigan Central for the second half of the day.

8:30 AM

Breakfast

Eat before the first admission window.

Museum cafés and nearby restaurants keep different schedules, so have breakfast near the hotel or along Woodward before the first timed entry.

9:30 AM

Murals, marble, and city history

Give the Detroit Institute of Arts enough time, then choose one second area.

Rivera Court and the Detroit Institute of Arts collections can fill several hours. Continue north to the Fisher Building and a current Motown program, or south toward downtown architecture and Corktown, according to current hours and reservations. Hitsville U.S.A. tours remain paused until spring 2027.

2:00 PM

Afternoon

Choose New Center, current Motown programming, or Corktown.

Those stops sit in different directions. One careful pairing leaves time for a neighborhood dinner and avoids a windshield tour of Detroit.

7:00 PM

Dinner

Choose dinner at Grey Ghost Detroit.

Grey Ghost is a meat-focused American restaurant and cocktail bar on Watson Street between Midtown and Brush Park.

Departure

Breakfast and one nearby stop before departure.

Stay near the hotel, Michigan Central, the riverfront, or the airport route rather than starting a distant museum visit before departure.

9:00 AM

Departure morning

Start with breakfast near the exit route.

The Hudson Cafe suits a downtown morning; choose another breakfast when Corktown, the riverfront, or the airport road makes more sense.

11:00 AM

Before checkout

Choose one short stop near the route out.

Walk the riverfront, see Michigan Central and Roosevelt Park, or inspect one downtown landmark only when luggage and departure timing allow.
