Things to do in Detroit

Detroit's essential sights do not fit one downtown loop. Give music and motor history, the Midtown museums, the market-to-river corridor, Belle Isle, Corktown, and an event night distinct portions of the trip.

Detroit in clusters

Walk one district at a time

Downtown combines Campus Martius, the Guardian Building, riverfront, theaters, and major venues. Eastern Market and the Dequindre Cut form another corridor. Midtown holds the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) and several cultural institutions; New Center brings the Fisher Building, current Motown programming, and nearby automotive history. Belle Isle and Corktown each require a separate ride or transit connection.

Music and motor history

Choose current Motown exhibitions for recording and performance history, Ford Piquette Avenue Plant for early automobile engineering, or Detroit Historical Museum for the broad city story. Give one institution at least two hours. Add Michigan Central and Corktown only when its current public spaces or programs justify the separate trip; Hitsville U.S.A. tours are paused until spring 2027.

Art and architecture

Make the Detroit Institute of Arts the main indoor visit on a first trip, then pair it with the Guardian Building Downtown or Fisher Building in New Center rather than another large museum. Families and wet-weather visits can substitute the Michigan Science Center for the architecture walk.

River, market, and island

Use an active Saturday Market for the Eastern Market start, then walk or cycle the Dequindre Cut toward the RiverWalk. Belle Isle needs a separate transfer and at least two hours; skip it when weather, daylight, or seasonal facility schedules make the riverfront the stronger afternoon.

Sports and performance

Choose the event first. Comerica Park, Ford Field, and Little Caesars Arena suit a Downtown event night; the Fox Theatre and Orchestra Hall fit a theater or concert evening along Woodward. Buy tickets before building dinner around the area, and leave extra arrival time when multiple venues are active.

Corktown and Michigan Central

Michigan Central, Roosevelt Park, and Corktown's restaurants occupy a separate west-side cluster. Allow two or three hours there rather than squeezing it between Midtown museums and a Downtown event.

Families and bad weather

The Michigan Science Center provides the clearest hands-on indoor choice; the Detroit Institute of Arts and Detroit Historical Museum offer quieter alternatives. In good weather, choose Belle Isle's nature center and open grounds, but verify seasonal facility hours before crossing the bridge.

Follow the Dequindre Cut toward the river

The below-grade greenway turns old rail infrastructure into a walking and cycling link between Eastern Market and the riverfront. Murals, bridges, ramps, and changing city views make the route more than a transfer. Check current access and construction before relying on a specific entrance.

At the river, continue only along open RiverWalk segments. The public riverfront is extensive but still evolving; closures and detours can interrupt a route that looks continuous on a map.

Midtown museums

Stand beneath Rivera's industry murals

The Detroit Institute of Arts can consume the best part of a day. Rivera Court places labor, machinery, raw material, and industrial power around the visitor, while the broader collection ranges far beyond the city's automotive identity.

The Wright Museum, Michigan Science Center, Detroit Historical Museum, and main library sit nearby, but nearby does not mean all belong in one day. Pick one major collection and one focused companion, then save room for the architecture outside.
